Sound Like Water: The Designers and Artists Letting Fluid Physics Shape the Way We Hear

Close your eyes for a moment and think about the last time sound genuinely surprised you. Not startled you — surprised you. When a piece of music or an ambient texture arrived in your body before your brain had time to categorize it. When you felt it move through you rather than simply hearing it pass by.

Now think about the last time you stood near moving water.

There's a reason those two memories might feel, in some essential way, alike.

The Physics Nobody Taught You in Music Class

Sound and water share more than metaphor. They share mechanics. Both travel in waves. Both bend around obstacles, reflect off hard surfaces, and lose energy as they move through denser material. Both can be channeled, amplified, scattered, or stilled depending on the environment they move through. Fluid dynamics and acoustic physics are, at a certain level of abstraction, the same conversation happening in different registers.

This isn't a new observation in scientific terms. But a growing community of sound designers, acoustic artists, and experiential creators in the US is doing something genuinely interesting with it — building work that uses the logic of fluid movement not just as metaphor, but as actual structural principle.

Marcus Hale, a Brooklyn-based sound designer who has scored immersive installation pieces for venues from the Ace Hotel to experimental art spaces in Detroit and Portland, describes his compositional process in terms that sound less like music theory and more like hydrology. "I think about where the sound wants to pool," he says. "Where it wants to accelerate, where it wants to eddy out into something slower. A good piece has the same kind of inevitability as a river finding its path downhill. You're not forcing it. You're following the terrain."

That language — terrain, flow, pooling — shows up again and again when you talk to people working at the intersection of acoustic design and spatial experience. It's not affectation. It's pointing at something real about how sound behaves in space, and how creative inspiration behaves in time.

Flow States and the Feeling of Inevitability

The psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi famously described the flow state as a condition of complete absorption — when skill and challenge align so precisely that self-consciousness dissolves and action becomes effortless. Athletes call it being in the zone. Musicians call it being in the pocket. Whatever you call it, most creative people recognize it immediately: the feeling that the work is moving through you rather than being produced by you.

Water does this too. Watch a river long enough and you start to see it not as a thing moving through a landscape, but as a process — a continuous negotiation between force and form. The river doesn't decide to carve a canyon. It simply follows the logic of its own movement, and the canyon is what happens over time.

Sound designer and kinetic artist Priya Okonkwo, based in Chicago and known for large-scale installations that incorporate both recorded sound and physical water elements, has built an entire practice around this parallel. Her piece Still Moving, which toured several US venues over the past two years, used hydrophones — underwater microphones — to capture the sound of Lake Michigan at different depths and times of year, then layered those recordings with synthesized tones tuned to match the resonant frequencies of the gallery spaces where the work was shown.

"The lake has its own compositional logic," Okonkwo explains. "My job was to listen to it carefully enough that I could translate it into something a room could hold. The water taught me how to tune the space."

Designing for Immersion, Not Consumption

There's a design philosophy embedded in this kind of work that runs counter to a lot of what dominates mainstream audio culture. We live in an era of content — music as product, sound as backdrop, audio experiences optimized for streaming metrics and playlist placement. What Hale, Okonkwo, and others working in this space are building is something fundamentally different: sound designed to be inhabited rather than consumed.

The distinction matters. When you consume something, you stay on the outside of it, processing it from a position of relative control. When you inhabit something, it surrounds you. It changes the quality of your attention. It asks something of your nervous system rather than simply entertaining it.

Water does this instinctively. Stand at the edge of a waterfall and you don't consume the experience — you're inside it. The sound is everywhere, including in your chest. Your breathing changes. Your sense of time loosens. That's not accident. It's physics acting on biology.

Acoustic designers who understand this are increasingly looking to water's behavior for principles they can apply deliberately. The way sound reflects off a concave surface the way water curves in a bowl. The way low frequencies travel farther and penetrate more deeply, the way cold water sinks. The way silence, like still water, holds tremendous potential energy.

The Meditative Turn in Sound Art

This impulse connects to something broader happening in American design culture — a genuine hunger for experiences that slow things down rather than speed them up. After years of maximalism, of screens and notifications and the relentless acceleration of attention, there's a real appetite for work that asks you to simply be present.

Sound art that draws on fluid principles tends to produce exactly this effect. It moves too slowly for impatience. It rewards sustained attention. It's the audio equivalent of watching a river from a bridge — nothing is happening, and everything is happening, and the longer you stay, the more you see.

Several design studios on both coasts are now explicitly incorporating acoustic flow principles into the built environments they create — wellness spaces, hospitality venues, and even office interiors where the acoustic design is treated with the same care as the visual one. Water features are integrated not as decoration but as active sonic elements, tuned and positioned to shape how sound moves through a room.

What the Current Carries

Maybe the deepest thing connecting sound and water is this: both are fundamentally about transmission. Sound is energy moving through a medium. Water is medium in motion, carrying whatever the land gives it. Both are changed by everything they pass through, and both change everything they touch.

Creative inspiration, when it's working, feels the same way. It doesn't originate in you, exactly. It moves through you, shaped by everything you've absorbed and experienced and paid attention to. The artist's job — like the river's job — is to keep moving, to stay open to the terrain, and to trust that the current knows where it's going.

That's not mysticism. That's fluid dynamics. And it might be the most honest description of making anything that I've ever heard.
